Colorized photo from 1942 Original title: Pool of small machine ships forming a sub-contracting group for war production Photographer: Hollem, Howard R Location: De Land, FL During World War 2, the government did what they could to keep a steady supply of parts. They would convert toy factories to make guns. Places that made cars might have made tanks for a while. For other instances they would hire small backyard outfits to make smaller parts. This is a group of backyard machinists, they have a series of lathes and a blacksmith set up in the back. Presumably the parts were small, but what they made is unknown. What I can say is, they could use a rake, and you really must wear shoes, you might want to brush up on your tetanus shot if you should visit there. Being Florida it was probably hot, but it looks pretty well ventilated.
